Kidney trafficking, although illegal, is thriving internationally more than ever. People are lured, deceived and tricked in a daily basis to donate their kidneys in exchange for money. Such has been the story of one of the remote villages in Kavre, named Hokshe.

Although, traditionally known for its holy temples, Hokshe, in recent years has been more infamously known as “bank of kidneys” for an apparent reason. Many men in Hokshe have been the victims of the kidney trafficking and live with scars on their abdomen - a mark left by the kidney extraction surgery. Most of them feel that they were taken advantage of their poverty and illiteracy. They were offered money in exchange of their kidney, and they were taken to hospitals in India for kidney transplant. A lot of these men are now suffering from the post-surgery complications - both physically and psychologically. They regret their decision to donate kidney, whether taken knowingly or unknowingly at that time, but now they have no other choice than to live with one less kidney.

Inspector Dipendra Chand from Kavre led Nepal’s fight against organs trafficking few years back. He investigated the trafficking for months to get to the bottom of the illegal trade and reveal the culprits behind the operation. In May 2013, Nepali police arrested ten people suspected of organ trafficking. The arrest uncovered that although the preys were targeted in a remote valley of Hokshe, the actual cell was rooted in Kathmandu.

The documentary, which started from the foothills of Hokshe enters the busy streets of Kathmandu to disclose a dirty little secret of Kidney trade in the heart of nation’s capital. The documentary secretly captures all the conversations with the kidney agent who calmly explains the cost, procedures and fake documents needed to carry out such trade. The documentary crew then head out to Kolkata, India, which is considered as the hub of the kidney transplant. The city has 10 hospitals specialized in kidney transplant, and most of the hotels and guest houses around the neighborhood is usually packed with traffickers and donors.
