There is no system in villages or rural areas for collection and disposal of refuse. Refuse is generally thrown away into low lying areas around the houses. Solid wastes and disposal of refuse Solid waste coming out of the kitchen consists of left-over food, dust particles and unused vegetable parts. It may consist of plastic bags, glass and metal pieces and other decomposed materials. If we throw the solid wastes around our houses, it makes the surrounding dirty and unsuitable for living.
Such waste materials cause air and water pollution. Therefore, we should know how to manage the solid wastes coming out of our houses by disposing them in a wise and useful manner. This can be done basically in two ways: – Compost manure – Recycling. Firstly we discuss about compost manure, more than seventy percent of solid wastes coming from homes are plant (vegetable and fruits) and animal bodies. Dead animal bodies and plants serve as food for growing plants. So, rotten and composed solid waste should be turned into compost manure for natural fertilizers. Compost manure manufacturing: We should dig a pit in a suitable location. It should be far away from the house. The size of the pit depends on the volume of waste materials. We should keep aside the plastics, glass and iron pieces. It should be sorted out from the waste materials.
Then we should deposit remaining decomposable materials into the pit. It should be moistened with some water before the pit is covered. Air should be allowed to get into the stuff. It helps in the decomposing process of the waste materials. After 5 to 6 months, compost manure will be ready for use. Compost manure should be kept covered and stored in a safe place. Now we discuss about recycling, solid wastes like paper, plastic or polythene bags and cloth pieces can be used again by recycling. For example, newspaper and writing paper sheets can be covered into envelopes, paper bags and fresh clean paper by recycling. Solid waste is a collective term used to distinguish non-biodegradable materials and discards that come from sources like: – Households – Businesses and Commercial establishments – Manufacturers or Industrial sites– Biomedical sources like hospital and clinics.
They are the trash collected by the municipal waste management units for segregation according to the process of disposal. Solid wastes are generally composed of nonbiodegradable and non-compostable biodegradable materials.
