Though grouse, rabbit, turkey and bear seasons are in full swing, with bowhunting on the horizon, the prodigious fishing is enough to tempt even the most die-hard hunter to emerge from the fields and dip a line in the sweet water. James Stack, 29, of Royal Oak lives the best of both worlds. He hunts and fishes simultaneously using his spear gun. Stack wanted to bring some attention to the modern version of an ancient sport, so he casually blew through five International Underwater Spearfishing Association (IUSA) records in a month. Now that’s Pure Michigan. “The diversity of species available to anglers and the (mostly) healthy waters make angling dreams become possible as realities. It’s more often obtainable than in any other freshwater fishery,” Stack said. On Aug. 12, he speared a record-breaking 22.4-pound common carp in Walled Lake. On the 24th, he broke the world spearing record for bowfin in Algonac — 5.1 pounds. Sept. 1, he broke his third record in three weeks with another monster carp bagged at 23.8 pounds and 36 inches. Two weeks later, he again crushed the bowfin record with a 5.7 pounder speared in Algonac, and that same day in East China he speared a 6.3-pound sucker for the record books. “We’re actively seeking members, and I thought there would be no better way to let them know that the glory is out there for the taking,” said Stack, who is a founding member of the Michigan Spearfishing Association. “Not a lot of people know about it.”
